Public Art - Projects and Proposals:

Adelaide House (Botanicals) - Bolton 2007

Botanicals was desined to bring colour and organic shape to a geometric garden site, and to add a focal point of interest for those using it.  Further information about the project can be seen below.  Images are available in the Public Art section of the Galleries.

Hoddlesden Millennium Green (The End of the Shift) Clay Faces Project - Hoddlesden, Darwen, 2006-2007

The End of the Shift commemorates the people of Hoddlesden who worked at Place & Co Ltd, the clay pipe factory, from early Victorian times to the mid-Twentieth Century.  The site of the factory, which had its own railway line and employed much of the village population, is now the Millennium Green, a nature and wildlife reserve.

The creation of 350 clay faces was truly a community event, with the participants ranging in age from 18 months to 91 years old.  Some had never done anything creative before and really enjoyed the experience.  More information is available below and you can see the images of the workshops and the sculpture on site in the Public Art Galleries, under Hoddlesden.

Ensemble I - Proposal for sculpture in Bolton town centre

Based on observations of the social interaction between Moshers in Bolton's Victoria Square, Ensemble I celebrates the way people come together to form friendship bonds in a particular place.  This proposal was part of my MA Public Art project in 2007, and although designed for Bolton, would be equally at home in any place where people gather.  See images in the Public Art Gallery

Ensemble II - Proposal for temporary Public Art event - a 'living sculpture':

This project, also part of my MA Public Art proposal, involved a large number of people assembling at a significant site.  All would wear a commemorative t-shirt with the Ensemble logo and when standing together en masse they would form a 'living sculpture'.  The proposal, a celebration of unity within a diverse community, was intended for Bolton, but is applicable to many other communities throughout the world.

Metamorphosis - Proposal for Sculpture Trail

This series of paintings and sculptures formed a proposal for the Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail in 2006, and was shortlisted by the commissioner.  This project was probably responsible for awakening an interest in environmental issues within art.

Protected Species - proposal for ceramic and steel sculptures:

Forming the basis of a proposed sculptural scheme submitted for Brighton and Hove district housing (Wellend Villas) in November 2007, the twin themes incorporate some rare and not so rare species found on the Sussex coast.  One site would feature sea creatures such as lobsters, hermit crabs, tompot blenny and bib fish, while the twin site would include rare coastal plants such as the endangered red hemp nettle and the sea pea.  See the images in the Galleries under Wellend Villas.

Sound Wave - an interactive sculpture

Created as my final piece for the BA (Hons) in Visual Arts, Sound Wave explores issues of sensory deprivation, the potential for sculpture to bring enjoyment of art to the visually-impaired, and an exploration of body awareness.  Built with a gravel floor, from mild steel panels, Sound Wave encouraged physical participation from viewers whose passage through the artwork generated a series of human-generated 'sound sculptures'.

Future public art projects will be featured here as they develop
